Reflection of the 4th and 5th day of WWW (Trip to Yala)

We were so excited for going to Yala but before that we also went to 2 temples which were very religious places. I made me realize the cultural importance of buddism in Sri Lanka. The 2 temples were very nice and they were situated at very peaceful places.

After visiting the temples we then went to Yala national park. At Yala national park we saw a tiger and a crocodile. The rich natural heritage of Sri Lanka was shown here. It was a lot of fun. After visiting these places we came back to hotel. The next day in the morning we left back for the school.

Here are some of my pictures on the trip.

Reflection for the 3rd day of WWW (Final Day for working at the schools)

The only thing that was going in my mind was that I needed to finish a lot of work along with my peers. There was so much work that it almost seemed impossible to complete every work within the time limit. Went we arrived at the school we were again welcomed by the warmly by kids of the school and given a flower by each of the child. After the welcoming we started interacting freely with the kids as it was easier for us and the kids to interact. We decided to play the games that the kids knew not the games that we knew in order to make it easier for the kids to understand the game.

After the interactive part I again started helping with the landscaping and today we removed the big rocks that could have harmed the kids. Our teacher Mr. Synder was supporting in every way in order to make us enthusiastic about the work. I removed about 6 big stones. The stones that were taken out of the group were put at one place so that the kids which are running around don't get hurt. After I helped with Landscaping I started helping with painting the outside of the school. It took a lot of time to be completed. Although me and the painting team was able to finish the work in 2 hours.

After that I helped in building a tree house for the kids with the supervision of Mr. Synder. He was a very good instructor. We had to firstly sand paper the new wood and remove the older wood. It took a lot of time to sand paper everything. Then we started planning out a strong structure for the tree house so that it is safe for the kids who are playing there. While working on the tree house I also helped with the murals. I helped them with my long height as I was the only person that could reach the top of the big walls and paint them . I also helped to mix some paints in order to get a perfect paint which was required for painting. Then we painting the see saws and we also fixed the swings. We replaced the old wood with new ones. We made everything look new by painting them.

After I finished helping other people with their work I returned to Mr. Synder in order to help him construct the tree house. After we finished planning for the structure we started putting every wood in place. It was a time taking job as we needed to do everything perfectly as we did not want the children to get harmed.

After we finished everything the school look like a better place for the children. The schools looked very new. I did a lot of work in order to make it possible for us to finish the work on time. After we finished everything we were assembled together for a final meeting with the kids. We sang a song for them and they also perform a song for us as a thanks giving for us. Then we packed up our tools and then we came back to the hotel. We were so exhausted by all the work that we had done, although there was sense of satisfaction from the work as we made the schools a better place for the children to study and gain knowledge.
Reflection for the second day of Week Without Walls

Today was very tiring although it was satisfactory. We did a lot of work in the schools although a lot of work is left for tomorrow as well. Firstly we were warmly welcomed by the children of the schools. We were given flowers by each child. Then we started interacting with the kids. It was a lot of fun when we were playing with the kids. I helped in order to organize the event of the student to children interaction. After this we started working. Firstly I started helping with painting inside the schools. We had to be were careful no to drop paint here and there. We needed to finish it fast and perfectly. In my group of painting we were divided into 2 groups. One was the group with the rollers and the other were people who did the edging. I was in the group with roller. I have to finish 7 small walls and 2 huge walls with blue paint. It took me a total of 2 hours to finish.

After I finished with painting the interiors I could have taken rest but I started to remember my goals which was to be collaborative and help my peers whenever they need help. So I went outside and then I started helping with landscaping. I was assigned to remove the small stones from the ground. In the hot sun I was working with my full potential. It took me 2 and half hours along with my landscaping group in order to remove all the small stones from the ground in order to make it a better place for the children to play. Then I took my lunch. Thinking back as I was eating my lunch I thought that it could be good if we put some sand from the beaches nearby on the the play-ground so that the children don't get hurt from the stones which are beneath it. I went to Mr. Synder with this idea and he said that he would think about it and consult with the other teachers.

After I finished my lunch I started helping Mr. Synder in order make a see saw from the tires which were lying nearby. In this process I climbed a tree and put a rope around a big branch of the tree. I enjoyed my time on the tree. It gave me a better look of the area which was around. I decided to climb higher on the tree although taking a short period of time for this as I did not have any time for wastage, went I went to the top of the 20 meters high tree there was such a beautiful scenery around. It made me realize the rich heritage of the natural surrounding of Sri Lanka. After spending some time on the tree I came back down. After I came down it was time for us to pack up and leave back for the hotel. I then started helping with the packing up of the stuff that we brought in for work. I carried a lot of heavy items to the van. After we packed up we left back for the hotel.

At the hotel then me and my friends playing cricket for fun. It was a part of our CAS program as I was engaged in action. It was fun to play in the natural surrounding and we had a lot of fun!
The First day of WWW

Today we went to visit the working places sites. There were two schools which needed to be repaired and renewed. Therefore our class was divided into 2 parts, these were merely grade 11.1 and grade 11.2. There is a lot of work required in order to make everything look good. The first school was the place where I had to work. My job is to engage with the children and play with them. Although i am going to help with everything as it is one of my goals. I am going to do the following things: -
1) Landscaping - (Remove all the stones from the playground area of where the children play make the play ground a better place).
2) Make painting (Murals) on the out side walls so that the school looks more colorful and it is better for the children.
3) Paint the insides of the schools.
4) Make a tree house.
5) Engage with the children and interact with them.

All I could say that day was, "Get prepared, a lot of work is needed!".

Goal Setting for my week without walls and a overview of it

This year my grade 11 team went to 2 schools for Week Without Walls trip. We had to repair the schools in which children from the tsunami regions have rehabilitated and make it a better place for those children to study. It was a challenge for us because we needed to use our skills in order to repair the schools. After we repair the schools we went to Yala National Park for a trip and found out more about Sri Lanka and its beautiful nature. This trip was a 5 day trip.

For this Week Without Walls I made the following goals for myself:
1) Do not give up.
2) Give my 100% to all the tasks that are given to me.
3) Be collaborative with my friends and help them whenever they need help.
4) Build up on my skills and working knowledge from the prior knowledge that I have.
5) Understand the global and international importance of work that I am doing in order to make the school a better place for the tsunami affected children to study.
6) Make a better place for the children to study and gain knowledge.
7) Be kind to people
8) Help in everything that is being carried out not only the thing that I have chosen.
9) Pay attention to the instructors/teachers and try to follow them as best as I can.
10) Try to the complete the tasks that are given to me before the time given.
